Air Sint Maarten was launched in January 2003 as a virtual airline with the intention of starting the first transatlantic low cost airline on April 20th, 2003. Since then Air Sint Maarten has flown hundreds of passengers to the island of St. Maarten on flights executed by KLM, Air France, DCA and Air Holland.
The plan now is to establish Air Sint Maarten, which is still in the formative stage, as the national carrier for the island of St. Maarten. The plan is to wait until St. Maarten is politically independent. As a national carrier Air Sint Maarten will then have rights to fly to any country, just like Aruba, which has 'status aparte' within the Dutch Kingdom.
In the meantime, the plan is to build the brand name AirSXM by offering commercial and charter flights between Amsterdam and St. Maarten through the online site Airsxm.com. The website will play a vital role in creating demand and volume. When enough volume has been garnered to fill weekly flights to St. Maarten and a second destination, the plan is then to obtain a Dutch AOC and operate a jet on a wet lease basis. This will enable Air Sint Maarten to take advantage of a specific gap in the transatlantic travel market between Europe and St. Maarten.
A gap exists in low cost service to St. Maarten from Holland. This gap in the availability of low cost service to the island of St. Maarten from Holland indicates that a new entrant airline company could be expected to capture a significant portion of current tourist business air travel to St. Maarten originating out of Holland and the surrounding countries in the rest of Western Europe.
Location
Each of AirSXM's various activities are strategically handled through different companies so no central office is required to operate in on the short term.
Market
The target market will be Western Europe, starting with Holland and Germany. Holland has a large market of Sint Maarteners, Antilleans, Arubans and Hollanders who are interested in spending holidays on the island of St. Maarten. The island of St. Maarten will be a welcome alternative in the German holiday destinations market as it offers German divers, sailors and nature lovers the choice of visiting and staying on Saba, St. Eustatius and Anguilla thereby creating a 2-in-1 vacation package.
Project Feasibility Study
The Air Holland operation into The Netherlands Antilles from Holland proved that the market is viable and was responsible for an increase of 15% in passenger traffic to the Antilles in 2003. The demised of this charter company was due to the financial burden of 30 million euro inherited from past operations and huge overhead and employment costs (250 employees).
Stage of Project
Air Sint Maarten is in the formative stage despite the fact that charters to St. Maarten, Curacao and Aruba have been executed together with Air Holland in 2003. Air Holland has been declared bankrupt in February 2004. Therefore, Air Sint Maarten is looking for a new charter company to carry out its charter flight plans.
Marketing, Public Relations & Corporate Sponsorship
Marketing will be done online via www.AirSXM.com, through link exchanges with related tourist and travel websites, through email marketing and email newsletter sponsorships.
