Megayacht show in St. Maarten on December 7-11th, 2004

PHILIPSBURG--The Island Government presented a cheque for US $20,000, as the first instalment of its US $50,000 contribution, to the organiser of the island's first ever megayacht show, the St. Maarten Charter Yacht Exhibition, set for December 7-11.

More than 50 megayachts are expected to take part in the exhibition billed for Simpson Bay Lagoon.

The cheque was presented to St. Maarten Marine Trades Association President Jeff Boyd by Commissioners Theo Heyliger and Louie Laveist at the Government Administration Building on Wednesday.

Laveist said the megayacht exhibition would help to bring more visibility to the island and this type of exposure was needed to keep the island as a premier destination.

The show will attract a high end clientele to the island, not only those with the yachts, but the chartered and private planes of the jet set crowd; thus it will have major spin-offs for the entire island, Heyliger said.

Boyd noted that the megayacht exhibition had been designed to be an annual event. The promotion for the exhibition is going extremely well, with the anticipated 50 megayachts already booked and others adding their names to the list. "It is going to be big this year."

The Island Government was thanked for its support of the exhibition, which was described by Boyd as a St. Maarten venture.
